Malaysia Fintech Trends 2026: Digital Payments, BNPL and What SMEs Need to Know

Digital payments now account for 50.72% of the fintech market, 6.5 million Malaysians use BNPL, and Project Nexus is about to transform cross-border payments.

Malaysia Fintech Trends 2026: Digital Payments, BNPL & Neobanking

Malaysia's fintech landscape is charging ahead in 2026. Digital payments have crossed the halfway mark, Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) is booming past RM9 billion, and neobanks are eating into traditional market share. For Malaysian SMEs and consumers alike, the financial services you use today will look very different by 2027.

Digital Payments: The Tipping Point

For the first time, more than half of all payment transactions in Malaysia are digital. The 50.72% penetration rate marks a watershed moment — cash is no longer king. E-wallets and QR payments have driven this shift, led by two dominant players.

Touch 'n Go eWallet commands a 78% usage rate among Malaysian digital payment users, making it the most widely adopted e-wallet in the country. Its widespread acceptance across tolls, retail, F&B, and public transport gives it an unassailable lead.

MAE by Maybank follows at 44% — a strong showing that bridges traditional banking with digital convenience. Maybank's vast existing customer base and integration with its banking app give MAE an edge that pure-play fintechs struggle to match.

The DuitNow QR ecosystem, now mandatory for all payment terminals, has standardised the merchant experience. SMEs no longer need separate QR codes for each provider — one DuitNow QR accepts all major e-wallets and banking apps.

BNPL Explosion: RM9.3 Billion and Counting

Buy Now Pay Later has exploded from a fringe product to a mainstream payment method. In 2025, Malaysian consumers transacted RM9.3 billion through BNPL services, with 6.5 million active users across platforms like Grab PayLater, Shopee PayLater, Atome, and SPayLater.

The appeal is clear: interest-free instalments with instant approval, no credit card required. For Gen Z and young Millennials, BNPL has largely replaced credit cards as the go-to credit vehicle for online shopping.

Regulation Catches Up: The Consumer Credit Act

The rapid growth has drawn regulator attention. The Consumer Credit Act (CCA), gazetted in 2025 and being phased in through 2026, brings BNPL providers under formal oversight for the first time.

Key provisions include:

• Mandatory creditworthiness checks before approving BNPL facilities
• A cap on late payment fees and interest charges
• Transparent disclosure of all terms in Bahasa Malaysia and English
• Registration and licensing of all BNPL operators under the newly established Consumer Credit Commission

The CCA strikes a balance — it preserves BNPL's convenience while adding consumer protections that were notably absent during the industry's Wild West phase.

Project Nexus: Cross-Border Payments Go Real-Time

Bank Negara Malaysia's participation in Project Nexus — a multilateral initiative connecting the instant payment systems of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, India, the Philippines, and Indonesia — is reshaping cross-border payments.

By linking Malaysia's DuitNow with regional counterparts (PayNow, PromptPay, UPI, etc.), Project Nexus enables instant, low-cost cross-border transfers without intermediaries. For SMEs, this is transformative: no more waiting 3-5 business days for international payments, no more 5-10% remittance fees.

A Malaysian e-commerce seller can now receive payment from a Singaporean buyer via PayNow-to-DuitNow in seconds, with the exchange rate pre-displayed and fees under 1%. The first live corridors launched in early 2026, with full regional rollout expected by end of year.

Neobanking: 26% CAGR and Climbing

Malaysia's neobanking sector is growing at a compound annual rate of 26%, driven by digital-native players like GXBank (backed by Grab and Singtel) and AEON Bank (Malaysia's first Islamic digital bank).

These banks operate without physical branches, passing the cost savings to customers through higher deposit rates, lower fees, and fully app-based onboarding that takes under 10 minutes.

GXBank has attracted over 800,000 users since launch, while AEON Bank's shariah-compliant digital offerings are tapping into Malaysia's large Islamic finance market. Traditional banks are responding — CIMB's Octo, RHB's Easy, and Maybank's MAE are all evolving into neobank-like experiences.

For SMEs, neobanks offer simplified business accounts with API access, automated bookkeeping, and instant financing decisions based on transaction data rather than collateral.

What This Means for SMEs

Three practical takeaways for Malaysian small businesses:

Accept every payment method. With 50% of transactions now digital, customers expect DuitNow QR, e-wallet, and BNPL options. SMEs without digital payment acceptance are actively losing sales.

Prepare for BNPL compliance. If you offer BNPL at checkout, ensure your provider is registered under the Consumer Credit Act. The compliance deadline is approaching fast.

Explore neobank business accounts. For a growing SME, a neobank account can offer lower fees, faster loan approvals, and better digital tools than a traditional current account.

FAQs

Is BNPL safe for consumers? The Consumer Credit Act now requires BNPL providers to assess affordability before approving credit. While risks remain for overspending, the regulatory framework provides stronger protections than before.

How do I accept DuitNow QR at my shop? Contact any participating bank or e-wallet provider. They will issue a single DuitNow QR code that accepts payments from all major apps. Setup typically takes 24-48 hours and costs nothing for micro-merchants under most plans.

Which e-wallet should my business support? At minimum, support Touch 'n Go eWallet (78% user share) and DuitNow QR. Adding MAE and GrabPay covers the vast majority of the market.

When will Project Nexus be fully live? The first corridors (Malaysia-Singapore, Malaysia-Thailand) went live in early 2026. Full coverage across all six participating countries is expected by Q1 2027.

Are neobanks safe for business banking? Yes. GXBank and AEON Bank are licensed and regulated by Bank Negara Malaysia. Deposits are insured under PIDM up to RM250,000, same as any conventional bank.
