What Apple Announced
Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event on 9 September US time — 1am on 10 September in Malaysia — ended years of folding-phone speculation. The iPhone Duo is Apple's first folding iPhone: a 7.6-inch inner display, the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, and Apple's new C2 modem.
For a small business the numbers matter more than the engineering. The Duo starts at RM9,499 for 256GB and reaches RM15,499 for 2TB. Pre-orders open Friday 16 October at 8pm MYT, and the device reaches stores on Friday 23 October. It ships with iOS 27.1 already installed.
What a 7.6-Inch Inner Screen Changes
Reading contracts without pinching
Most of us already read supplier agreements, tenancy contracts and LHDN correspondence on a phone, with constant zooming and sideways panning on a 6.3-inch screen. A 7.6-inch panel is close to an iPad mini, so a full A4 page sits legibly — useful if you sign things in a client's office.
Quotations, invoices and spreadsheets
Accountants and sales teams live in spreadsheets and PDF quotations. Extra horizontal space means more columns visible at once and fewer misfiled entries — not a laptop replacement, but a narrower gap for anyone who thumbs through a five-tab workbook on a phone.
Showing clients your work
For anyone who sells visually, the unfolded screen is also a portfolio. Handing a client a 7.6-inch screen for product photos beats asking them to squint at your phone.

Durability: What IP68 Really Buys You
Foldables have a reputation problem in Malaysia — hinges, dust, and our humidity. Apple has answered with an IP68 dust and water resistance rating for the Duo, and highlighted it against Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8. IP68 covers the realistic Malaysian scenario: a downpour between the car and the shop.
It does not mean the Duo is indestructible — the moving parts of any foldable still accumulate wear, and Apple has not stated a fold-cycle figure.
No Action Button — but Apple Pencil Support
The Duo has no Action Button — if you have trained yourself to launch a camera or scanner from that side key, you will lose the habit. It does work with the US$79 USB-C Apple Pencil, though not the Apple Pencil Pro. That means cheap document annotation: mark up a quotation, write margin notes on a tenancy agreement, then email the annotated PDF back to the office.
Battery Life: Read the Fine Print
Apple says Duo battery life iPhone Duo is available in two finishes, star white and night sky, in grade 5 titanium. Image: Apple. — the honest way of saying the big inner display draws more power. A day heavy on the outer screen will be fine; four hours unfolded will not. Apple has not published an hour figure, so do not assume iPhone 18 Pro Max numbers.

Price and Availability in Malaysia
| Model | Malaysia price | Key dates |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo 256GB | From RM9,499 | Pre-order 16 Oct, 8pm MYT; stores 23 Oct |
| iPhone Duo 2TB | RM15,499 | Same window |
| iPhone 18 Pro 256GB | From RM5,499 | Pre-order 12 Sept, 8pm MYT; stores 18 Sept |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | From RM5,999 | Same window |
One detail worth flagging: Apple did not announce a standard iPhone 18 this year, and it raised Malaysian prices on the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e by up to RM1,300.

The Honest Verdict: Buy Now or Wait?
Buy generation one if reading and marking up documents on the move is genuinely your bottleneck, or if you already carry both a phone and a small tablet. The Duo collapses two devices into one, and IP68 means you are not handling it with tongs.
Wait if you mostly use a laptop and only need a phone for calls, WhatsApp and banking. At RM9,499 you are paying a RM4,000 premium over an iPhone 18 Pro for a screen you may not unfold often. Foldables also improve fastest in their second generation.
A practical middle path: buy one Duo for the person who reviews documents and meets clients, keep the rest of the team on iPhone 18 Pro handsets, and review after six months.
Conclusion
The iPhone Duo is not a novelty. A 7.6-inch screen, IP68 protection, document annotation and the same A20 Pro chip as Apple's flagship Pro make it a legitimate work device for the right Malaysian SME owner.
But RM9,499 to RM15,499 is real money, and generation-one foldables are always a bet on how you will actually work. Match the purchase to a specific daily bottleneck and it pays for itself; buy it because it is new and it will not.
Apple's date is 23 October. You have until then to decide which owner you are.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How much is the iPhone Duo in Malaysia?
Apple Malaysia prices the iPhone Duo from RM9,499 for the 256GB model up to RM15,499 for 2TB. Pre-orders open Friday 16 October at 8pm MYT, and it reaches stores on Friday 23 October.
2. Can I claim the iPhone Duo as a business expense?
A phone used for business can generally be treated as a business asset or expense, but the treatment depends on your entity type and how the device is used. Check with your tax agent and keep proper records of business use.
3. Does the Apple Pencil Pro work with the iPhone Duo?
No. Apple says the Duo works with the US$79 USB-C Apple Pencil, not the Apple Pencil Pro. That is actually cheaper for a business that just needs to annotate quotations and contracts.
4. Is the folding screen durable enough for daily site work?
The Duo carries an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, which Apple highlighted against Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8. That covers dust and accidental water exposure, but no foldable is immune to long-term hinge wear.
5. Should my SME upgrade from an iPhone 17 Pro?
Only if the folding screen solves a specific problem for you. Otherwise the iPhone 18 Pro offers the same A20 Pro generation and variable aperture camera at RM5,499, which is RM4,000 less.
